The Timmins High Vocational School Blues defeated the O Knights 61 30 to capture the Junior Division championship at the 2018 Canadore College Great Northern Shootout Basketball Tournament at secondaire catholique Algonquin on the weekend.
three big guys played really well and we had a guy (Hayden Holmes) coming off an injury who made a big difference for us. Blues had to overcome a bit of adversity in the championship game.
Duguay got into a little bit of foul trouble, but we were able to work around it really well, Boissoneault said.
bench really contributed. We weren able to play Jeremy much in the first half, but Holmes really made a big difference. We were very happy to get him back. who had been out since the start of the season with a broken collar bone, only recently returned to the Blues lineup.
has only been back for the past two or three weeks, Boissoneault said.
has played himself into shape and he was really made a big difference. Hagerty hit for a game high 18 points to lead the Blues attack against the Knights in the championship game.
Faucher added 16 points, while Duguay was also in double figures with 10 points.
Amir Farrokhpey and Carter McCormick,
with seven points apiece, were the top scorers for the Knights.
big difference in the game is that we were very good at getting the ball inside, Boissoneault said.
game is largely an inside game, since we score roughly 80% of our points from inside, particularly between Faucher and Duguay.
gets them the ball, which is a big thing. Hagerty also has the ability to hit from the outside or drive the basket.
play the inside game as much as we can. If we get long on the (shot) clock, we will dish the ball out for a three ( point attempt). Blues were pretty efficient from three point range,
as well, as they shot more than 40% during the tournament.
guys only take threes when they are wide open, Boissoneault said.
either get a good look, or they don attempt the shot. A lot of teams will just throw the ball up, but we won do that. feels it is kind of ironic the Blues were matched up against the Knights in the championship game.
two Timmins teams ended up playing each other in the final and that says a lot for local basketball, Boissoneault said.
In round robin play, the Blues opened with a 59 39 win over the St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School Bears,
before defeating the secondaire catholique Algonquin Barons 45 32 and finishing up with a 55 25 win over the Widdifield Secondary School Wildcats.
In the opener against St. Benedict, the Blues got 25 points from Duguay, 19 from Faucher and 12 points from Hagerty.
Faucher hit for a game high 22 points to pace the Blues attack against the Barons in Game 2, while Duguay chipped in with 12 points.
Against the Wildcats, Faucher had 21 points to lead all scorers, Duguay added 20 points and Hagerty hit for 11 points.
Meanwhile, the Knights dropped a 43 40 decision to West Ferris Secondary School in their round robin opener,
before rebounding to take down the St. Joseph Scollard Hall Bears 50 41 and the Chippewa Secondary School Raiders 53 44.
While the Blues did many things well during the Great Northern Shootout, one of the keys was their ability to break their opponents press attempts.
scored against every team that tried to use the press against us, Boissoneault said.
have been very good against the press all year and by the end of the tournament, nobody was trying to use the press against us. and fellow coach Peter Graham are pleased with the progress the Blues have made since their season began.
are very happy with the degree of skill development we have seen from our players during that time, Boissoneault said.
have come quite a way since they were beaten by the Huntsville High School Hoyas at the Arthur Gabor Invitational Tournament in North Bay back in December. That is the last tournament or league game we have lost.
of our Grade 9s hadn played before this season, or not much, and they are improving very fast. They are getting there. They are helping out a lot more than they did at the start of the season.
