HENNIKER, NH Vivian M. Allen, 81, of 127 Maple Street, Henniker, NH, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning at home, accompanied by her loving family, after a long period of failing health.
She was born July 2, 1927, daughter of John and Gertrude Gainey. She had resided in Henniker since 2001.
She is survived by her sister Jane Gervais of Troy; by her daughter Bonita, wife of Dr. David Conway, with whom she lived in Henniker; and by her son William of Ocean View, DE. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
There will be no visitation. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Tucker Free Library, PO Box 688 Henniker, NH 03242, the staff of which assisted her greatly with her love of reading.
The Holt Woodbury Funeral Home Cremation Service, Henniker, NH, is in charge of arrangements.
She moved to Staten Island with the love of her life, her late husband Joseph, where they raised their four children and participated in a variety of civic and church volunteer activities.
Upon her retirement from the state Department of Motor Vehicles as a supervisor of training, they moved to Brevard, NC, where Ann continued volunteer service with numerous area organizations.
She was a lifelong lover of nature and a longtime supporter of the Sierra Club, The Audubon Society and Berea College.
Ann enjoyed traveling extensively throughout North America and Europe with family and friends. Ann moved to the Capital District from Brevard five years ago to be closer to her children.
She is survived by her four children, Joseph Behson of Averill Park, Ann Marie Cheshul of Keene, NH, Beverly Goodfellow of Delmar and Barbara Volpe of New City; eight grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. at St. Henry’s Church in Averill Park. A brief memorial gathering will take place immediately following the service. There will be no public calling hours.
Memorial contributions in Ann’s name may be made, with the family’s thanks, to The Audubon Society.

GREEN ISLAND Charles F. Finning Jr., 75, of Green Island, died on Thursday,
June 25, 2009, at the Samaritan Hospital in Troy with his loving family surrounding him.
He was the beloved husband of the late Patricia Hartley Finning who died in 2003.
Born in Green Island, son of the late Charles and Marion Collins Finning, he was a lifelong resident. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Charlie had been employed as a civil engineer by the state Department of Transportation, Region 1, for over 30 years, retiring in 1995.
He was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Green Island, a member, past commander and past chaplain of the Legnard Curtin Post American Legion in Green Island and a member of its Last Man’s Club. He was a member and director of the Society of the Friends of St. Patrick and a member of the Association for Research and Enlightenment in Virginia Beach.
Charlie will be fondly remembered for being Green Island’s Santa Claus for over 40 years, bringing joy to many children.
He is the devoted father of Cathy (Kenneth) Johnson of Cohoes, Theresa (Daniel) Crassman of Florida, Patricia (Richard) Nolet of Cohoes, Charles (Cynthia) Finning III of Troy and Diana (Jeffrey) Stufflebeam and Tara Finning, both of Green Island; dear brother of Joan (Fred) Ross and Diane (Richard) Giroux, both of Green Island, Marion (John) Hupe, of Loudonville and Florida, Lynn (Steve) Hogan of Latham and the late John and Lawrence Finning. Charlie is also survived by 10 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, his special lady friend Betty LaChapelle and his dear friend and sister in law Nancy Hartley Heffern.
Funeral from the McNulty Funeral Home, 147 Hudson Ave. and from St. Interment with full military honors will be in Memory’s Garden in Colonie. at the funeral home.
Because of the wonderful care given to Charlie over the years, the family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Charlie’s honor to the Green Island Fire Department, 7 Clinton St., Green Island, NY 12183.
The mother of nine children, she was predeceased by her husband Michael E. Gilchrist; her sons Michael J. (Marba), John T. (Cathy), Neil J. (Susan deceased) and Damian P. (Hazel); her daughter Anne A.; as well as her grandson Timothy M.
Eleanor is survived by her beloved sister Alva Trimble as well as her sons David F. (Patty), Mark R. (Greta), Evan F., all of Watervliet, and her daughter Elizabeth G. Kelly (David) of Discovery Bay, CA. Also 16 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral service at the Cummings Funeral Home, 643 Third Ave., Watervliet, on Wednesday at 10 am. Interment will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery,
