By Christy Hutchings bio emailMIDWAY, GA (WTOC) It what a lot of people in Liberty County are talking about, calling it a shoot out between an armed gunman and police. It happened off Highway 84 in Midway. GBI agents say an officer shot and killed a man, after they say he opened fire on officers.Whether you dining at a Midway Pizzeria, or stopping by a local shop, what happened last night on Highway 84 is the talk of the town. “It was wild,” said Jack Campbell.Campbell owns K and J Woodworking on Highway 84 and was just feet away from where the shooting took place. “I walked out of the door of the shop and there were about ten to fifteen cop cars that had that car surrounded. He went right up there, over the curve and came back out and pulled into a field over there,” said Campbell.Stanley Pope was even closer. It all happened in his back yard. “Then all of a sudden I heard what sounded like the 4th of July fireworks,” said Pope. “There were cop cars, police cars, ambulances, and fire trucks all over the place.”Police tell WTOC officers tried to pull over the driver who was wanted in connection with a burglary and arson that took place Sunday. GBI agents say when the officers got out of their cars, that the driver, William Gordon started shooting at them. They shot back, killing Gordon.”It just a shock,” said Kayla Faulk with Pizza Peddler. Faulk says since yesterday, it has all anyone is talking about.People living in Midway tell WTOC there a lot more to the story. In fact, they say it all started in Fleming on Sunday. They say the man that police shot actually burned his father shed to the ground. While police are not confirming that, neighbors Megan Thornton and Casey Hardwick say they think it true. They were right next door, when the shed caught fire. “We woke up to hear gun shots and I went to my sister room and was like, look out the window. As soon as we looked out the window we seen the fire,” said Hardwick. They say it wasn until after they talked to their neighbor, who lost the shed in the fire, that they learned the shooting and the fire may be connected. “His father said for three weeks he been calling him, threatening to kill him,” said Hardwick. While police continue to be tight lipped about the shooting, they also continue to investigate, trying to piece together just what happened on Highway 84.Several agencies responded to the location of the shooting. At this time it still unclear who, and what department fired the fatal shot, or whether anyone has been placed on administrative leave because of the shooting.Hilton Head Island celebrates 35th St. Patrick’s Day paradeHilton Head Island celebrates 35th St. Patrick’s Day paradeUpdated: Sunday, March 11 2018 11:11 PM EDT2018 03 12 03:11:18 GMTThe season of St. Patrick is here in Savannah and even surrounding areas like Hilton Head, where the Beaufort County city celebrated their 35th St. Patrick’s Day parade.
